Respiratory physiotherapists specialise in assessing and treating respiratory (breathing /  lung) conditions and problems.  This includes breathing pattern disorders, asthma,  lung conditions such as COPD,  anxiety related breathing issues, chronic pain and Long Covid-19 symptoms.

Precise regulation of breathing is vital for good health, however many things can go wrong with breathing.  Breathing can be disrupted due to feelings, abnormal thinking or because of biomechanical and biochemical factors.

At least 1 in 10 people experience some form of breathing pattern disorder or chronic over-breathing at some time in their lives.

Some typical symptoms of a breathing pattern disorder include:

  • Frequent sighing or yawning
  • Feeling anxious and uptight
  • Pins and needles
  • Upset gut / nausea
  • Disturbed sleep
  • Erratic heartbeat*
  • Breathing discomfort*
  • Clammy hands
  • Feelings of air hunger
  • Dizzy spells* or feeling light headed
  • Reflux
  • Tired all the time
  • Chest pain*
